Tara Stotram is a powerful hymn dedicated to Devi Tara, the second of the Dasha Mahavidyas. Tara is both fierce and compassionate, embodying both Mahakali’s terror and Saraswati’s wisdom.

Sacred Verses

1.Verse 1

Sanskrit

जय तारामयं देवीं, तारिणीं भक्तवत्सलाम्। नीलोत्पलदलश्यामां, नीलवर्णां महासतीम्॥

Hindi Translation

जय हो तारामयी देवी की, जो भक्तों की उद्धारिका हैं। जो नील कमल के समान श्यामवर्ण की हैं, और महान सती हैं।

English Translation

Victory to Goddess Tara, who embodies compassion and salvation, with a deep blue hue like the blue lotus, the great chaste one.

Explanation

A salutation to Tara as the merciful savior, beautifully depicted in dark blue, symbolic of her depth and transcendence.

2.Verse 2

Sanskrit

उद्धृत्य भयनाशाय, तारिण्यै मङ्गलाय च। प्रसन्नवदनाम्भोजां, वन्दे तारां महेश्वरीम्॥

Hindi Translation

जो भय को नष्ट कर उद्धार करती हैं, उन मंगलमयी तारिणी को प्रणाम। उनके प्रसन्न मुखकमल को मैं वंदन करता हूँ।

English Translation

To Tara who uplifts and destroys fear, the auspicious deliverer, I bow down to her lotus-like smiling face, the great goddess.

Explanation

This verse praises Tara's blissful and protective nature—her smile comforts and grants liberation.

3.Verse 3

Sanskrit

कालरात्रिप्रतिच्छन्नां, त्रिनेत्रां शूलधारिणीम्। सिंहवाहां क्षमामूर्तिं, तारां जगतां मातरम्॥

Hindi Translation

जो कालरात्रि के समान तेजस्विनी हैं, तीन नेत्रों वाली और त्रिशूल धारण करने वाली हैं। सिंहवाहिनी, क्षमा की मूर्ति, वह तारा जगत की माता हैं।

English Translation

She who is veiled in the night of time, three-eyed, bearing the trident, riding a lion, embodiment of forbearance—Tara, the mother of all worlds.

Explanation

Tara is portrayed as the cosmic mother who embodies divine wrath and infinite compassion.

4.Verse 4

Sanskrit

महातारा महाविद्या, महामाया महेश्वरी। महादेवी महाशक्तिः, सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायिनी॥

Hindi Translation

महातारा, महाविद्या, महामाया, महेश्वरी। महादेवी, महाशक्ति, और समस्त सिद्धियाँ देने वाली देवी।

English Translation

She is Mahatara, the great wisdom goddess, the great illusion, the great lady of Shiva. The great goddess, great power, and bestower of all accomplishments.

Explanation

A verse of divine titles signifying Tara’s supreme role as the ultimate source of all spiritual powers and grace.

5.Verse 5

Sanskrit

नमस्ते तारिणि शुभे, नमस्ते ज्ञानरूपिणि। नमस्ते सर्वमङ्गल्ये, नमस्ते शरणागतम्॥

Hindi Translation

हे तारिणी शुभस्वरूपा, आपको नमस्कार। हे ज्ञानस्वरूपिणी, आपको नमस्कार। हे सर्वमंगलमयी, आपकी शरण में नमस्कार।

English Translation

Salutations to you, O auspicious deliverer. Salutations to you, embodiment of knowledge. Salutations to you, the source of all blessings. I bow to you in surrender.

Explanation

A prayer of complete surrender to Tara, invoking her auspicious, wise, and nurturing nature.
